Freehand Knife Sharpening & Maintenance Is Easy (and Fun!)

  • Coralville Community Food Pantry 804 13th Avenue Coralville, IA, 52241 United States (map)

Do you have some kitchen knives that just don’t cut it? Because your knives are dull doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy a new one!

Why use whetstones vs. sharpening equipment? Sharpening on whetstones helps maintain the life of your knife, gives you superior control of your knife’s angle and cutting edge, provides a sharper and more durable edge, provides a more cost-effective process, provides one with a valuable skill, and can become a fun, satisfying process.

This 2-hour hands-on class will have you sharpening a knife on a whetstone, which will help you reduce your fear of using sharpening stones to keep your knives sharp at home, plus learn about different knives, cutting boards, sharpening stones, and how to care for your kitchen knives.

This class will be led by David Jensen, a knife enthusiast and knife sharpener. He does not use any mechanical tools for sharpening, only sharpening stones. David learned sharpening through professional sharpeners, and loves the thrill and zen-like feelings of sharpening knives for charitable groups and kitchens, friends and family. He also collects Japanese knives and considers them as art as much as functional tools.

To ensure high‑quality instruction and meaningful one‑on‑one attention, the class is limited to 6 participants. Please fill out this form if you're interested: https://forms.gle/zk5tek3kTT4NrEa3A
